Cloud Storage via WebDAV

Many cloud storage services and NAS devices support WebDAV, an open standard for accessing files over the internet. With the location type Cloud storage via WebDAV (Nextcloud, pCloud, Koofr, …), SyncFolder connects to such a service directly. It can be used as source, destination, or as a location of a 2-way sync task. After selecting this type and clicking Select drive/folder, the Select a folder on the WebDAV server popup opens. Setup takes two steps: Connection and Folder.

Step 1 of 2 — Connection

Provider

Choose your service from the Provider list. SyncFolder knows the WebDAV settings of these providers, so you usually only need your account name and password:

ProviderWhat you enterRemarks
pCloudRegion, account, passwordChoose the Region where your account is located: Europe or United States.
KoofrAccount, app passwordRequires an app password (see below).
kDrive (Infomaniak)Account, passwordUse an app password if two-step verification is on.
Icedrive · Yandex Disk · mailbox.org · HiDrive (Strato) · HiDrive (IONOS) · MagentaCLOUDAccount, passwordFixed entry point for this provider.
STACKAccount, passwordThe server address is derived from your account name.
Nextcloud · ownCloud · SeafileServer address, account, passwordThe address of your own server or of your hosting provider.
Synology WebDAV ServerServer address, port (default 5006), account, passwordThe WebDAV Server package must be installed and enabled on the Synology NAS.

Connection Fields

Server addressText

Only for providers you host yourself or that have a server per customer. "The address you use to sign in with a browser. SyncFolder looks up the WebDAV path itself." For example cloud.example.com.

Account name and Password / App passwordText

The account you use for the service. "If two-step verification is on for your account, use an app password instead."

Some providers never accept your normal password for WebDAV. The field is then called App password and SyncFolder shows "… does not accept your normal password for WebDAV. Create an app password for SyncFolder." with a link Create an app password in your … account that opens the right page of the provider.

Advanced - set the WebDAV path manuallyOptional

Normally the entry point (the WebDAV path of your account) is either fixed for the provider or looked up automatically: "After signing in SyncFolder asks the server for the WebDAV path of your account. The path is not derived from the name you type, so an LDAP or e-mail login works too."

Only if that doesn't work, open this section and enter the WebDAV path yourself. "Leave empty to let SyncFolder determine the entry point."

Click Connect. If the server uses a certificate that Windows doesn't trust (for example a self-signed certificate on a NAS), SyncFolder shows the certificate details first. Click Accept only if you recognize the server — see Permissions.

Step 2 of 2 — Folder

  1. Browse the folder structure of your account and select the folder for the task. Use Refresh to reload the list.
  2. To create a folder, use New folder: enter the Name of the new folder and click Create.
  3. Confirm the selection. The Target folder is shown in the popup; the currently configured folder is marked Current.

The popup also shows what the server supports. These properties affect how efficiently SyncFolder can work:

PropertyMeaning
Keeps modified dateThe server keeps the original modification date of uploaded files, so unchanged files are recognized quickly.
Checksums … / No checksumsWhether the server can report checksums of files, which allows reliable change detection without downloading.
Chunked uploadLarge files are uploaded in parts, which is more reliable on slow or unstable connections.
Folder ETagsThe server can report whether a folder has changed, so unchanged folders can be skipped quickly.
