SyncFolder Privacy Statement
Last updated: October 15, 2026
This privacy statement explains what data the SyncFolder apps for Windows and Android process, why, and what control you have over it.
Who we are
SyncFolder is developed by Jos Huybrighs, Belgium ("we", "us"). Contact for privacy questions: privacy@compuwise.be.
Summary
- Your files are copied directly between the locations you configure. They are never sent to us.
- Credentials for storage services are stored encrypted on your device and are only sent to the storage service itself.
- Log files stay on your device unless you choose to share them.
- The Windows app sends anonymous error reports to our own server so we can fix crashes. You can turn this off at any time.
Windows SyncFolder app
Your files
SyncFolder copies and synchronizes files between the source and destination locations you configure, such as local drives, USB devices, network shares, NAS devices, FTP/SFTP and WebDAV servers, OneDrive and Google Drive. File contents are transferred only between those locations. We never receive, view or store your files.
Credentials for storage services
Some locations require you to sign in or to configure credentials:
- OneDrive and Google Drive: you sign in through the provider's own sign-in page. SyncFolder never sees your password; it receives an access token from the provider, which allows it to access your files on your behalf.
- Network shares, NAS devices, FTP, SFTP and WebDAV servers: you enter an account name, password or key in the app.
These credentials and tokens are stored in encrypted form on your computer. They are only read at the moment a connection is made, and only sent to the storage service they belong to. We do not receive them and do not use them for any other purpose.
Error reporting
To find and fix crashes, the Windows app sends error reports to our error tracking service, hosted by us on Microsoft Azure ([region, e.g. West Europe]). An error report contains:
- technical details about the error (error message and stack trace),
- the app version, Windows version, and processor architecture,
- an anonymous installation identifier — used for finding out the number of unique installations.
Error reports do not contain your files, credentials, name or e-mail address, and don't include file or folder paths.
Error reporting is on by default. You can turn it off in Settings → Error Reporting. Reports are kept for 12 months and are then deleted. They are only used to improve the stability of SyncFolder and are never shared with third parties or used for advertising.
We process this data on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing a stable and reliable app (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), and you can object to it at any time by turning error reporting off.
Log files
For troubleshooting, you can let the app write log files. This is off by default and can be turned on in Settings → Log files. Log files never contain passwords, but they may contain file and folder names and paths.
Log files stay on your computer. They only leave your device if you send them to us or to someone else yourself.
Android SyncFolder app
Your files
The Android app copies files between your device and the external storage locations you configure. This includes photos and videos, but also other types of files, such as documents. The app only accesses the files and folders you select or give it access to through Android's permission system.
File contents are transferred only between your device and those locations. We never receive, view or store your files.
External storage locations
The Android app supports two kinds of external storage:
- NAS devices and network shares: you enter an account name and password in the app to access the device.
- A Windows computer running SyncFolder: to connect your device to the computer, you scan a QR code shown by the Windows app. During this pairing, your device and the computer negotiate a secret token. Both store this token and use it only to authenticate every later connection, so only your paired device can access the computer. Communication between your device and the computer is encrypted.
These credentials and tokens are stored in encrypted form on your device. They are only used to connect to the storage location they belong to and are never sent to us.
Log files
The Android app writes troubleshooting information to a readable log file in the app's Private folder. This log file never contains accounts or passwords, but it may contain file names. It stays on your device unless you choose to share it, for example with us when reporting a problem.
App stores
SyncFolder is distributed through the Microsoft Store and the Google Play Store. These stores may collect data about your purchase and installation under their own privacy policies. We only receive aggregated statistics from them, such as the number of installations and crash counts, which cannot identify you.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. Because error reports are anonymous, we usually cannot link them to you; if you want reports related to your installation removed, contact us and we will help where possible.
You also have the right to file a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority (Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit, www.dataprotectionauthority.be).
Children
SyncFolder is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
We may update this privacy statement when the apps change. The date at the top shows when it was last updated. Significant changes will be mentioned in the changelog.
